Following the collapse of a two-storey building at Saint Academy Secondary School in Busa Buji, Jos North Local Government, Plateau State, Governor Caleb Muftwang has ordered a comprehensive integrity test for all private school buildings in the State.
The Governor also directed the immediate arrest of individuals engaging in illegal mining activities in the area, which he believes have compromised the foundations of many building structures.
An inquest into the cause of the incident has been launched to prevent similar disasters in the future.
Governor Muftwang expressed his condolences over the tragic incident and declared three days of mourning, with flags flying at half-mast to honour the deceased students.
He visited the victims in the hospital and conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the situation, ordering the immediate closure of the school.
The Federal Government has also ordered a full investigation into the cause of the building collapse.
The incident occurred during an examination, trapping students and teachers, resulting in 22 reported deaths and several injuries. The building had shown signs of distress before collapsing.
The rescue efforts by the Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB) were unsuccessful due to the extent of the damage by the time they arrived at the scene.
