The Verification Panel of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has approved the Faculty of Nursing Sciences at the Federal University Otuoke, acknowledging its compliance with the fundamental requirements.
The faculty comprises four departments: Medical/Surgical Nursing, Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing, Maternal and Child Health Nursing, and Community Health Nursing.
Dr. Ndagi Alhassan, the Director of S/Accreditation and Head of the Verification Panel, announced the positive evaluation during the exit report on October 31, 2023. He praised the Vice Chancellor, Professor Teddy Charles Adias, for his dedication to establishing the Faculty and emphasized the significance of nursing as a noble and rewarding career.
Dr. Alhassan commended the University’s commitment to realizing its vision, noting the conducive learning environment and adequate manpower for the four programs. However, he suggested improvements in the training manuals to align with contemporary nursing practices. Additionally, he pointed out discrepancies in staff employment letters and advised prompt attention from the management.
In response, Professor Adias expressed gratitude for the positive assessment and acknowledged the challenges in the nursing profession, with a significant number of nurses migrating abroad. He affirmed the University’s commitment to continuous improvement and highlighted ongoing ICT support and infrastructure developments.
The Vice Chancellor assured the Verification Panel of the University’s dedication to providing a conducive learning environment, with well-equipped libraries and Internet access. He clarified oversights in showcasing certain facilities during the panel’s visit.
The Verification Panel, consisting of members such as Addy Onasome, Cynthia Tokere Boufini, Andabai Mbelekpe Senia, Akpoyovwere Obataze J., and Nsoku-Chinedu Nneka J. CNO NMCN, was led on a tour of the Faculty by Dr. Edet Umoh, the Dean, along with heads of departments. Overall, the visit affirmed the University’s commitment to the development of its nursing programmes.
