In a bid to sanitize the education sector, 18 Foreign universities have been banned from operating in Nigeria by the Federal Government.
Describing the universities as ‘Degree Mill,’ FG warned Nigerians to avoid enrolling in them.
It has further temporarily suspended the evaluation and accreditation of degree certificates from Togo and the Republic of Benin.
The directives affected five Universities from the United States, six from the United Kingdom, and three tertiary institutions from Ghana.
The institutions affected are the University of Applied Sciences and Management, Port Novo, Republic of Benin, or any of its other campuses in Nigeria; and Volta University College, HO Volta Region, Ghana, or any of its other campuses in Nigeria.
It affected The International University Missouri, USA, Kano and Lagos Study Centre, and any of its campuses in Nigeria; and the Columbus University, United Kingdom operating anywhere in Nigeria.
The list comprised the Tiu International University, UK; Pebbles University UK, operating anywhere in Nigeria; and London External Studies UK operating anywhere in Nigeria among others.
In the same vein, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has also guided students and parents through a statement signed by Acting Executive Secretary NUC, Mr Chris J. Maiyaki, on its website that the banned universities were not licenced.
On its website, NUC provided the list of 58 banned universities as being closed down due to gross violation of education minimum standards.
In addition to the closure, it also listed some universities it tagged ‘Degree Mills’ as currently undergoing investigation as well as court action in a bid to prosecute the proprietors and recover illegal charges on subscribers.
The action by the Federal Government was prompted by an investigative report carried out by a Daily Trust reporter, Audi Umar, who secured a degree certificate from a university in the Republic of Benin within two weeks and also participated in the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) one-year mandatory service.
