The Federal Ministry of Education has directed all university Vice Chancellors to ensure the safety and security of students, staff, and infrastructure during the planned 10-day protest, starting August 1, 2024.
In a circular dispatched through the National University Commission (NUC) and signed by Acting Executive Secretary Dr. Chris Maiyaki, the Ministry acknowledged citizens’ constitutional right to protest.
However, Maiyaki expressed concerns that the protest might escalate into disruption, violence, and destruction of lives and property.
The directive follows instructions from Education Minister, Professor Tahir Mamman.
Entitled “Urgent Arrangements for the Security and Safety of University Staff, Students, and Property During the Proposed Nationwide Protest,” the circular advised VCs to implement measures to protect university communities.
VCs are also instructed to issue statements reassuring staff and students of their safety and advising them to remain on campus to avoid potential risks associated with the protests.
