The Tinubu-led Federal Government has launched an ambitious multi-year Accelerated Senior Secondary Programme (ASSEP) to transform education in the northeast geo-political zone.
This initiative aims to overhaul school infrastructure, modernize curricula, and integrate virtual learning technologies in the region.
The program is a key policy drive to address the education gap in the country, starting with the North-east region.
During the unveiling ceremony in Bauchi State, Vice President Kashim Shetima (represented by his spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha) explained that the program is designed to accelerate the upgrade of secondary school education across three core pillars: access to tertiary institutions, imparting market-relevant skills, and upskilling teachers.
According to Shetima, the initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s vision to combat the region’s multi-faceted challenges, including insecurity and stagnant human capital outcomes.
The ASSEP initiative will ensure high-quality instruction, incentivize STEM achievement, revamp dilapidated classrooms to modern specifications, and enrich academic experiences.
A core technological component will scale up virtual learning capabilities, leveraging online modules to supplement in-person instruction and narrow the digital divide.
The Vice President noted that the implementation will occur in phases, addressing urgent needs first, followed by infrastructural groundwork for expansion, before ASSEP’s comprehensive scaling across the region.
