Being Inspired
In my final year at the elementary school in 1979, My dad took me to the University of Ibadan (UI) to witness the occasion of my mum’s graduation ceremony.
When we drove in a Peugeot 504 car into the campus, everything I saw fascinated me. The big halls, the long tarred road, the different lecture theatres, and the cool ambience of the University community were beautiful scenes to behold.
When I saw graduates neatly robed in their convocation gowns and the multitude of students who came to witness the occasion, I stood enthralled.
Much more inspiring to me was when I saw how the academia, comprising high-ranking lecturers and professors filing out, dressed in their more decorated and elegant gowns to indicate their elevated positions and accomplishments, making their way to the Trenchard Hall, the convocation arena.
The procession was led by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, the ‘baritone-voiced’ and distinguished English Language scholar, Professor Ayo Banjo. From then I knew I was going to pick up a university degree one day.
This inspiration got more animated when again in the subsequent year, my uncle, who was pursuing a Law degree at the same University took me along on a sightseeing of the environment. I was again captivated by all that I saw.
The most intriguing was a short excursion at the Botanical and Zoological Garden of UI, and how a free meal ticket, courtesy of my uncle, earned us a sumptuous meal. This experience again solidified my determination to obtain a university degree. From then I started preparing.
Getting prepared for higher education should start with being inspired and determined to get into the environment early enough.
You prepare for it as you watch it, read about it, listen to people discuss it and internalize the culture.
You can prepare also by doing the following:
Have the conviction about the course of study you want to pursue. Know what you want to study or what you want to become.
Embark on finding out about the right subject combinations that can enhance the study of the course you desire, and work towards it.
Study the admission requirements and strive towards meeting them at the ordinary and higher levels. You have to meet the requirements to earn a study.
Study hard and work towards good grades. You have to be extraordinary and excellent at O’Level and the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). Get high scores to meet the UTME cut-off point.
When you meet the cut-off and are offered admission, strive for good standing to defend your admission.
