Nigerian rapper and songwriter Folarin Falana, aka Falz, has revealed the inspiration behind blending his music with activism.
In a recent chat with the Menism podcast, he credited the late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti as a significant influence in fusing his music with activism.
According to him other musicians who influenced him include Trybesmen and Plantashun Boiz.
Falz stated, “Those early influences shaped my style. I knew I would do things differently, which is why my music has been laced with activism. It’s a mix of all the greats I’ve listened to, and I’ve created my own style.”
Falz, also a comic actor, is known for producing songs like “Wehdone Sir,” “Child of the World,” “This is Nigeria,” and “Talk,” which address Nigeria’s socio-political and economic challenges.
He actively participated in the #EndSARS protest in Lagos, forcing the government to disband the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
In 2023, he campaigned against electoral malpractice and political apathy among youths, encouraging them to take an active role in Nigerian politics.
As the son of human rights lawyer Femi Falana, Falz owns an independent record label, Bahd Guys Records. He has won awards like Best Street Hop Artiste of the Year (2015) and Viewer’s Choice Best New Act (2016).
