A comprehensive five-day training programme for Nigeriaโs intermediate referees will conclude with a closing ceremony at the NFF/FIFA Goal Project, MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, today.
During the program, 40 participants engaged in classroom discussions on various topics, including penalty-area incidents, tactical fouls, recovery strategies, offside, handball, and other challenges referees face.
The course kicked off on Monday with a fitness test, followed by an outline of the course objectives and a video presentation on modern refereeing techniques.
Participants also took part in on-field sessions, practicing with players in mini-matches designed to prepare them for advancement to elite-level officiating. On Friday morning, a final practical training session and a presentation on new match preparation concepts will precede the closing ceremony, scheduled for 2:30 PM.
The primary goals of the course include identifying and nurturing refereeing talent, establishing a sustainable development program through the Young Talent Program, creating a pool of talented young referees for national and international duties, and ensuring the continuous growth of refereeing in Nigeria.
The programme has been led by two FIFA instructors: former FIFA referee Felix Tangawarima from Zimbabwe (FIFA Senior Technical Instructor and COSAFA VAR Project Manager) and Mark Mzengo from Malawi (FIFA Fitness Instructor).
Following this event, another five-day course for Nigeriaโs elite referees will begin on Sunday, July 7th, at the same venue. This course, also involving 40 participants, aims to enhance the skills of Nigeriaโs top referees.
