The Honourable Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, has urged Nigerians to embrace Open Distance Learning (ODL) degrees, stating that ODL is the future of education.
Speaking at a three-day stakeholders’ roundtable in Abuja, the Minister reaffirmed that the ODL system has come to stay, having served its purpose and continuing to do so.
“The future of education in the world is ODL,” he said, adding, “As technology advances and internet access increases, various services like medicine, education, commerce, and others are being redefined. We cannot afford to be left behind.”
The Minister noted that Nigeria’s focus on ODL has shifted from being desirable to becoming a reality, with the establishment of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and the emergence of conventional universities and polytechnics offering ODL programs with the approval of the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
Professor Mamman assured stakeholders of strong quality assurance measures in place to ensure the content and delivery system of ODL operators meet the highest standards, addressing concerns about the quality of ODL education.
He emphasized that degrees obtained through ODL from accredited institutions have equal value to those issued by conventional universities.
