The esteemed Governor of Edo State, Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki, has stepped in to provide crucial support and relief to the players and officials of the Nigeria Premier Football League team, Sunshine Stars FC of Akure, who recently endured a harrowing experience.
In an unfortunate incident on the Ore-Benin Highway last Thursday, armed robbers attacked the team bus en route to Benin City for a scheduled NPFL Match 13 against Bendel Insurance. The assailants left a ball boy injured from a gunshot, while the players and other officials were left deeply traumatized and disoriented.
Displaying his commitment to the well-being of the sports community, Governor Obaseki swiftly dispatched high-ranking officials and personal aides to the hospital where the ball boy was receiving treatment, along with the distressed members of the team.
Governor Obaseki has now taken a commendable step by offering to cover the medical expenses for all those affected by this unfortunate incident, exemplifying his genuine concern for the welfare of the sports fraternity.
Acknowledging this noble gesture, the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, expressed gratitude, stating, “We extend our thanks to His Excellency Mr. Godwin Obaseki for this compassionate act. Such a commendable move underscores his nobility, and we deeply appreciate his support. Our thoughts are with the injured ball boy and the traumatized players and officials, and we pray for their swift recovery.”
