Afrobeats sensation Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has voiced his concern that the genre may fade away if his colleagues don’t work to sustain its global momentum.
In an interview with Apple Music, Rema warned that Amapiano, South Africa’s popular music style, is gaining traction in Nigeria and may surpass Afrobeats if not properly nurtured.
Rema drew inspiration from Afrobeats legends like Don Jazzy, Tuface Idibia, Olamide, P Square, Timaya, and Mo’hits crew, who shaped his music and inspired him.
He praised their unique sound, saying, “When a Mo’hits song plays, you know it’s a Mo’hits song within the first four seconds.”
Rema admires Amapiano’s energy but believes Afrobeats has been unmatched in African clubs.
He emphasized that Afrobeats hasn’t lost its appeal but needs continued effort to maintain its tempo and avoid losing focus.
Recently, Rema performed impressively at the wedding of Anant Ambani, son of Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, in India.
