The Afrobeats singing sensation, Divine Ikubor aka Rema, has become the first recipient of the MTV ‘Best Afrobeats’ category award in 2023.
The winner was made known on November 6, after the event could not be held on grounds of the ongoing war between Israelis and Hamas.

MTV had included a new category called ‘Best Afrobeats’ for the 2023 ceremony, announcing its nominees as comprising Burna Boy, Davido, Asake, Ayra Start, and Rema among others.
Meanwhile, Burna Boy lost out in ‘Best Afrobeats,’ ‘Best African Act,’ and ‘Best Live Performer’ categories.
The loss followed his being stripped of all seven nominations for the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards.
