The Managing Director and CEO of Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Akintunde Sawyer, has expressed concern that students from the Southern region are questioning the legitimacy of the student loan scheme.
Sawyer revealed this while addressing journalists, stating that data shows more applicants from the Northern region have applied for the loan.
“Institutions in the north have been proactive in supporting their students and providing necessary data,” Sawyer said.
However, he remains optimistic that doubts from Southern students will dissipate once NELFUND begins disbursement.
“Skepticism in the Southern region will decrease as we start paying out loans to students in various institutions,” he added.
Sawyer noted that awareness and interest in the scheme are growing nationwide. He reported that universities have the most applicants, followed by polytechnics and colleges of education.
Applicants can apply for a loan to cover school fees, an upkeep loan, or both.
“You can’t receive a stipend unless your fees are paid and you’re enrolled in an institution, but you can opt for fee payment without the stipend loan,” Sawyer clarified.
