Nigeria has successfully secured a spot in the knockout stages of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau in the decisive Group A match at the Stade Félix Houphouet-Boigny, Abidjan, on Monday.
In the wake of a crucial win against host Ivory Coast, Coach Jose Peseiro implemented several changes to the starting lineup. Kenneth Omeruo assumed the captaincy instead of Troost-Ekong, and Joe Aribo stepped in for Alex Iwobi. Guinea-Bissau, buoyed by their previous success against Mauritania, aimed to replicate their achievements.
Victor Osimhen posed an early threat for Nigeria, though his shot narrowly missed the target. Despite sustained pressure from the Super Eagles, Guinea-Bissau held their ground, with Nito testing Stanley Nawabali from a distance.
While a draw would have sufficed for Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau actively pursued the win, challenging the Nigerian defence, notably through Dalcio Gomes.
