Despite high hopes, the Super Falcons were unable to soar in their final Group C match of the Paris 2024 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament. They suffered a 3-1 defeat to Japan, marking their largest loss of the tournament, and will return home without securing a point from their first Olympic appearance in 16 years.
After narrow 1-0 losses to Brazil and Spain in their previous matches, expectations were high for the Falcons to make a strong push against the Asian champions. However, Japan took an early lead with two goals within ten minutes of each other, leaving the Nigerian team with a challenging deficit.
Mika Hamano scored the first goal for Japan in the 22nd minute, followed by a second goal from Mina Tanaka in the 32nd minute, putting the Super Falcons under immense pressure. Jennifer Echegini gave the Nigerian team a glimmer of hope with a brilliant strike three minutes before halftime, but Japan quickly restored their two-goal lead with another goal from Hamano during added time of the first half.
The anticipated comeback in the second half did not materialize, and the Super Falcons exited the tournament in France without earning any points, having scored only one goal across their three matches.
