After a five-year hiatus from international competition, Nigeria’s Supersand Eagles are heading to Nouakchott on Friday morning for their 2024 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Mauritania, scheduled for Saturday.
The match, the first in a two-leg series, will be officiated by a team of Egyptian referees. Hany Farouk El-Sayed Eleraky will serve as the main referee, with Ahmed Mohamed Elwan Nofal and Ibrahim El-Sayed Mahgoub as the second and third referees, respectively. Khaled Mohamed Elewa will act as the timekeeper, while Moroccan El Mansouri Taha will be the match commissioner.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Abdullahi Isa, a former goalkeeper and assistant coach, as the new Head Coach of the Supersand Eagles. Christopher Kadiri will assist him, and Bashar Samaila will be the Goalkeepersโ Trainer.
The squad includes seasoned players such as Victor Tale and Emeka Ogbonna, along with Arome Isah, Adams Taiwo, Emmanuel Ohwoferia, Godwin Tale, Egan-Osi Ekujimi, Chidozie Frank, and Hassan Abdullahi.
The return leg is set for Saturday, July 27, in Nigeria.
Following the disappointment at the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Paraguay in 2019, which led the NFF to temporarily withdraw the team from international competitions, a group of enthusiasts led by Mallam Mahmoud Hadejia has kept the sport alive in Nigeria through the annual Nigeria Beach Soccer League and various tournaments.
