The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), in collaboration with the Sports Ministry, has announced two significant appointments in preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The highly anticipated Games will officially commence on Friday, July 26, 2024, in Paris, the city famously known as the “City of Love.”
In a statement issued by Tony Nezianya, who will serve as the Press Attachรฉ for Team Nigeria, it was revealed that Tobi Amusan from the athletics team will be the flag bearer, while Anuoluwapo Opeyori from the badminton team has been named General Team Captain.
Tobi Amusan, the current world champion in the 100m hurdles, is one of Nigeria’s top medal contenders for Paris. Earlier this year, she clocked a world-leading time of 12.40 seconds (with a 0.9m/s wind), showcasing her exceptional form. She narrowly defeated two-time world champion Danielle Williams of Jamaica, who finished with a time of 12.46 seconds.
Anuoluwapo Opeyori, an accomplished badminton player, has been representing Nigeria since 2017. The 26-year-old secured victories in the singles event at both the African Championships and African Games in 2019 and also competed in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
As the General Team Captain, Opeyori will be instrumental in providing leadership and guidance to the Nigerian contingent in Paris. Drawing on his international experience, he aims to inspire his teammates to achieve their best performances.
The appointment of Amusan and Opeyori to these esteemed roles underscores the nation’s high hopes for its athletes at the upcoming Olympic Games. Both athletes have demonstrated their capabilities on the global stage and are well-positioned to lead Nigeria’s quest for success in Paris.
