The University of Ibadan (UI) research team in the Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development and the Department of Food Technology has formulated a complimentary food known as “Nutri Active Baby Food” for Infants between the ages of six months and two years.
According to the Directorate of Public Communication, Office of the Vice Chancellor, UI, the project was sponsored by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND).
It said the research was a result of a TETFUND intervention project approved for UI and sourced solely from locally available food items.
Speaking, the Principal Investigator of the project, Professor M.K Yahaya, stated that the efforts of the research team were focused on putting indigenous products together.
He added the formula was capable of sustaining children for days without any other food items as it is very rich in nutrients needed for survival.
At the sensory evaluation presentation of “Nutri Active Baby Food” in Ibadan, The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, expressed that the research team comprised a group of astute researchers and contributors to the economic development of Nigeria.
Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration, Professor Peter Olapegba, the VC noted that the project looked inwards, using locally and readily available food items, adding this would make the local industries grow.
While appreciating TETFUND for sponsoring the project, he said children would be well fed, and employment opportunities would be provided, as he also pledged that UI would give the most support to the project.
