The UK Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Philipson, has hinted at a potential increase in tuition fees for international students. This development is attributed to inflation, but Philipson assured that domestic students’ fees would remain unchanged, as they have been since 2012, with the last increase occurring in 2017.
Philipson stated that the government is not prepared to bail out universities facing financial difficulties, despite widespread job losses, course closures, and potential bankruptcies.

However, she confirmed that the new government would maintain the graduate route, allowing international students to apply for post-graduation work visas or search for employment in the UK.
Philipson acknowledged the significant contribution international students make to the local economy and regeneration efforts, highlighting their global reach upon returning home after completing their education.
In a critique of the previous Conservative government, Philipson expressed that they had engaged in unnecessary confrontations with the sector, using universities as a means to stay in the news.
She emphasized that this approach would no longer be tolerated, stating, “We need to get the regulation right.”
