The management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) is working to resolve the crisis sparked by a three-week power outage, which led to student protests and disrupted vehicular movement on the Lagos-Benin Expressway.
According to Dr. Benedicta Ehanire, Public Relations Officer of the institution, a Senate meeting is underway to address the students’ grievances and find a lasting solution to the power outage.
The students, who blocked the outbound route of the expressway and chanted slogans, expressed hardship and disturbance caused by the outage, which has impacted their preparations for the upcoming first-semester examination.
The university and the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) have been at odds over an electricity bill, which BEDC increased by over 200 percent from N80 million to between N200 and N280 million.
The university has resorted to rationing power across its campuses and hostels, using generators to cope with the skyrocketed charge.
