Following the allegation that the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) might not have accredited the Engineering courses at the University of Calabar, the University has said that the professional body can come for the accreditation of all Engineering courses after the outcome of the accreditation conducted by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
This was contained in a response by the Registrar, University of Calabar, Gabriel Egbe, to an alleged warning by COREN in a publication that the institution should get properly accredited or risk blacklisting, wondering why COREN would be credited with such publication.
Egbe said when COREN called for accreditation last time, it was informed that the NUC must first conduct its accreditation before any professional body, adding that this was in line with the established procedure.
According to the Registrar, NUC visited the institution in November 2023 for accreditation of all programmes that were due for the exercise, including programmes in the five departments of the Faculty of Engineering.
Egbe disclosed that the result of that exercise was still being awaited, saying the University has had no record of failed accreditation with its Engineering programmes as COREN was “making people believe.”
He expressed that it was on the strength of the outcome of NUC accreditation that COREN would be officially invited to come for its professional accreditation, as the regulatory body was saddled with the responsibility of ensuring professional accreditation of Engineering programmes in Nigerian Universities.
