
Both University of Calabar and Federal Government of Nigeria, through the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (NMEC) may have taken skill acquisition for students to the next level.
This comes as NMEC delivered the first tranche of various vocational and functional literacy equipment to enhance skill development among students and the larger society.
The tranche delivered, which were presented to the Department of Continuing Education and Development Studies, comprises sewing machines and their accessories, gas cookers, refrigerators, deep freezes and air treatments saloon accessories and cooking utensils.
Taken the delivery of the equipment, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Florence Banku Obi, represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Angela Oyo-Ita, commended the Federal Government (FG) for the giant step taken to further promote skill acquisition aimed at self-development of graduates.
Speaking further, Prof Obi praised the FG for making University of Calabar one of its pilot centres for skill acquisition, adding the development has shown that the exercise of skills matter without which certificates become deficient.
The University assured FG that the equipment will be judiciously used for the development of the students and all the categories of learners, saying the programme will enhance the potential of the university to attract more fundings and incentives from the FG and its other international partners.
The Executive Secretary of NMEC, Professor Simon Akpama earlier had said the initiative was a concurrence with the commission’s policy thrust, saying the symbiotic synergies do exist between diverse tertiary institutions whose programmes encapsulate the ardent promotion of Education of Youths and Adults for Sustainable National Development.
