1871: With the passage of the Third Force Act, popularly known as the Ku Klux Act, Congress authorizes President Ulysses S. Grant to declare martial law, impose heavy penalties against terrorist organizations, and use military force to suppress the Ku Klux Klan (KKK).
1902: Marie and Pierre Curie successfully isolated radioactive radium salts from the mineral pitchblende in their laboratory in Paris.

In 1898, the Curies discovered the existence of the elements radium and polonium in their research on pitchblende. One year after isolating radium, they would share the 1903 Nobel Prize in physics with French scientist A. Henri Becquerel for their groundbreaking investigations of radioactivity.
1946: The League of Nations was officially dissolved by its member states. The League of Nations was shown to have been a complete and utter failure, given it was unable to prevent World War II. When it was dissolved, many of its institutions were simply transferred to the United Nations.

1951: A human organ is surgically replaced for the first time. Romanian surgeon Dan Gavriliu used a section of the stomach to bypass the esophagus.

1978: Soviet air defense shoots down Korean Air Lines Flight 902. The Boeing 707’s crew had miscalculated their route, taking them into Soviet airspace at the height of the Cold War. The jet made an emergency landing on a frozen lake. Two passengers were killed in the incident.
1989: Scientists said that the Earth had narrowly missed being struck by a passing asteroid weighing 400 million tons.

1999: Two teenage gunmen kill 13 people in a shooting spree at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, south of Denver. At approximately 11:19 a.m., Dylan Klebold, 17, and Eric Harris, 18, dressed in trench coats, began shooting students outside the school before moving inside to continue their rampage.

By 11:35 a.m., Klebold and Harris had killed 12 fellow students and a teacher and wounded another 23 people. Shortly after noon, the two teens turned their guns on themselves and died by suicide.
2010: The Deepwater Horizon oil rig explodes. The explosion of the British Petroleum (BP) platform operated by Transocean killed 11 workers and led to the largest accidental marine oil spill in history.
2018: Prince Charles is appointed to become the next head of the Commonwealth once Queen Elizabeth II passes.

2020: The price of a barrel of crude oil dipped below zero. This is the first time in history that oil turned negative. On this day, producers were out of space for their supplies, with many giving it away. Before the dip, one barrel of oil was at $18, and the next day the same barrel was worth -$38 on the open markets. With so many people staying home because of COVID-19, oil demand plummeted, and oil futures sunk because more was produced than could be stored.
2021: Today, on Twitter, 4:20 is trending, and yes, even in Nigeria. For those not familiar with the term 4:20, itโs slang used by marijuana smokers to refer to marijuana-related activities, and also to smoking at 4:20. It also refers to the annual April 20th (4/20) celebration of all things cannabis, which happens to be today. Marijuana is illegal in Nigeria so all such activities take place underground, away from the eyes of the law.
2023: SpaceXโs Starship rocket exploded four minutes into its first full flight test.
The Starship rocket, the most powerful rocket ever built, is set to one day carry human colonists to Mars. Despite the explosion, SpaceXโs engineers celebrated the launch, as it provided invaluable data.

Adolf Hitler (20 April 1889 – 30 April 1945)
Adolf Hitler was an Austrian-born German politician, born on 20 April 1889 in Braunau am Inn, Austria. He was the dictator of Nazi Germany from 1933 until his suicide in 1945. He rose to power as the leader of the Nazi Party, becoming the chancellor in 1933 and then taking the title of Fรผhrer und Reichskanzler in 1934. He died at the age of 56.
