399 BC – The Greek philosopher Socrates was sentenced to death for corrupting the minds of Athens’s youth. He chose not to flee the city and take his execution by drinking hemlock, a highly poisonous plant from the carrot family.
1882 – The first shipent of frozen meat left New Zealand for England.

1936 – Adolf Hitler announced the construction of the Volkswagen Beetle.
1965 – Nathaniel Adams Coles, known professionally by his stage name Nat King Cole, was an American singer, jazz pianist, and actor. Cole’s career as a jazz and pop vocalist died of cancer at the age of 45.
1995 – Nelson Mandela announces he will not stand for re-election in 1999.
2001 – The first draft of the human genome is published in Nature Magazine. The human genome contains the complete human genetic information.
2015 – A teenage female suicide bomber detonated herself at 1pm at a crowded bus station in Damaturu, Yobe State, killing at least 16 people and wounding 30 others. It was Damaturu’s first suicide bombing.
1971 – Pennies, bobs and half-crowns all disappear as Britain goes decimal. The Pence and Shilling had been used in Britain for 1,200 years.
2003 – The largest peace demonstration in history takes place. Up to 30 million people in 600 cities around the world protested against the Iraq War.

Jane Seymour OBE (born Joyce Penelope Wilhelmina Frankenberg; 15 February 1951) is an English actress. After making her screen debut as an uncredited extra in the 1969 musical comedy Oh! What a Lovely War, Seymour transitioned to leading roles in film and television, including a leading role in the television series The Onedin Line. She is 73 today.

Galileo di Vincenzo Bonaiuti de’ Galilei, commonly referred to as Galileo Galilei or simply Galileo, was an Italian astronomer, physicist and engineer, sometimes described as a polymath. He was born in the city of Pisa, then part of the Duchy of Florence. He died at the age 77.
