1933: Newly elected President Franklin D. Roosevelt took office and delivered his first inaugural address attempting to restore public confidence during the Great Depression, stating, “Let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself…” His cabinet appointments included the first woman to a Cabinet post, Secretary of Labor, Frances Perkins.

1966: John Lennon, caused outrage amongst Christians by stating “We’re more popular than Jesus Christ right now. I don’t know which will go first – rock ‘n’ roll or Christianity.” Beatles’ records were consequently banned in many US states and in South Africa.
1977: The Vrancea earthquake claims over 1500 lives. Most of the victims were residents of Romania’s capital Bucharest
1980: Robert Mugabe becomes Zimbabwe’s first black prime minister. A hero of the black struggle against the white minority rule in his country, Mugabe won a landslide victory. More recently, his oppressive style of leadership has been condemned domestically and internationally.
1997: London, the match-fixing trial of footballers Bruce Grobbelar, John Fashanu and Hans Segers ended in deadlock, with the jury failing to reach verdicts.

2009: The International Criminal Court (ICC) issues an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur. Al-Bashir is the first sitting head of state to be indicted by the ICC since its establishment in 2002.

Brooklyn Joseph Peltz Beckham is an English socialite and former model. He is the eldest son of former footballer David Beckham and fashion designer and former singer, Victoria Beckham. He is 25 years old today.
Miriam Makeba (March 4, 1932 – November 10, 2008)
South African-born singer who became known as Mama Afrika, one of the world’s most prominent Black African performers in the 20th century.
She also became known for songs that were critical of apartheid. In 1960 she was denied reentry into South Africa, and she lived in exile for three decades thereafter. In 1963 the South African government banned her records and revoked her passport. She died at the age of 76.

Antonio Vivaldi (4 March 1678 – 28 July 1741)
Antonio Lucio Vivaldi was an Italian composer, virtuoso violinist, and impresario of Baroque music. Along with Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel, Vivaldi ranks amongst the greatest Baroque. He was 63 when he died.
