
1521: Martin Luther declared a heretic by the Edict of Worms
Passed this day in 1521, the Edict of Worms banned the writings of Martin Lutherโa German cleric whose efforts to change the church led to the Reformationโand declared him an outlaw and a heretic who was to be captured.

1876: HMS Challenger
The Challenger Expedition, a groundbreaking oceanographic exploration cruise carried out by the British Admiralty and the Royal Society, concluded successfully.

John Wayne (26 May 1907- 11 June 1979)
Marion Robert Morrison, motion-picture actor professionally known as John Wayne, and nicknamed “the Duke”, embodied the image of the strong, taciturn cowboy or soldier, was born on May 26 1907 in Winterset, Iowa. He became a popular icon through his starring roles in films that were produced during Hollywood’s Golden Age, especially in Western and war movies. He died at the age of 72.

Miles Davis (26 May 1926 – 28 September 1991)
Miles Dewey Davis III was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer. He is among the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th-century music. He died at the age of 65.

Rebecca Masika Katsuva (26 May 1966 โ 2 February 2016)
Congolese rape survivor advocate, in Katana, Democratic Republic of Congo. In 1999 during the Second Congolese Civil War, she was raped four times by government soldiers and rebels. In one attack, militants killed her husband and raped her and her two daughters, aged 13 and 14. The daughters were impregnated, and her husbandโs family expelled them from their home. To assist other rape victims, she founded the Association des Personnes Desherites Unies pour le Development, providing shelter to abused women โ 6,000 who were helped by her before her death on 2 February 2016 at the age of 49.
