In a largely lackluster match, France managed to edge past Belgium with a late goal, securing their place in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals at Düsseldorf Arena. Substitute Randal Kolo Muani’s shot, deflected off Vertonghen with five minutes left on the clock, sealed the 1-0 victory.
Despite creating numerous chances, France struggled with their finishing, including captain Kylian Mbappe missing opportunities he would typically convert. Belgium nearly took the lead themselves when Kevin de Bruyne’s powerful run ended with a shot that Mike Maignan saved.
The Belgians had few opportunities, and France held firm in the closing minutes to book their place in the last eight, where they will face Portugal.
Though they were the deserving winners, France’s inability to convert chances into goals remains a concern. They controlled much of the game but only managed a single shot on target in the first half, a comfortable save from Antoine Griezmann’s low strike.
Kylian Mbappe, one of the world’s premier forwards, struggled to find the net, notably missing a good chance in the second half after creating space for himself. France ended the match with 19 shots, but only two were on target, and they have yet to score from open play in the tournament.
For now, the French team will take solace in advancing to the next round, even as they work to raise their performance levels in pursuit of the title.
