In the upcoming knockout stages of the ongoing 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, the Super Eagles are resolute in their commitment to overcoming the challenge posed by the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon.
The encounter is set to take place in Abidjan on Saturday, creating a reminiscent atmosphere of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 clash between the two teams in Alexandria, Egypt.
During the 2019 encounter at Alexandria Stadium, the Eagles displayed remarkable resilience, turning the tables from a 1-2 deficit to secure a 3-2 victory against the reigning champions, the Indomitable Lions.
Notable contributors to that triumph included Odion Ighalo, who netted two goals, and Alex Iwobi, expected to play a crucial role in the upcoming match, scoring the decisive winner. Captain Ahmed Musa, along with defenders William Ekong, Kenneth Omeruo, Ola Aina, Chidozie Awaziem, and forward Moses Simon, all present in Abidjan, were instrumental in the historic game in North Africa.
Reflecting on the past encounter, Musa acknowledged the toughness of the duel and emphasized the team’s unity, determination, and the joy of emerging victorious.
Anticipating an even tougher match on Saturday, Musa asserted the team’s commitment to giving their best and pursuing a win, reiterating the unchanged aspiration to secure the trophy.
Noteworthy Nigerian football legends, including Olusegun Odegbami, Jay Jay Okocha, Augustine Eguavoen, Daniel Amokachi, and Garba Lawal, have travelled to Abidjan to support the team. Joining thousands of Nigerians based in Cote d’Ivoire, they will add their voices to cheer on the Eagles in this crucial clash.
NFF Technical Director Eguavoen, a former on-field captain during the 1994 triumph in Tunisia, highlighted the need for enhanced preparation and emphasized the team’s flair and flexibility to counter Cameroon’s determination and grit.
In terms of the squad, midfielder Alhassan Yusuf, who sustained an injury in a challenging match against Equatorial Guinea, has returned to training. There is a possibility of his inclusion in the lineup alongside Frank Onyeka, while Alex Iwobi is expected to play a pivotal role in the midfield.
Coach José Peseiro may opt for a defensive lineup featuring Ola Aina, Chidozie Awaziem, William Ekong, Calvin Bassey, and Zaidu Sanusi, with the potential inclusion of Kelechi Iheanacho and Victor Osimhen in the forward positions.
