I dig this
I dig that
Never dug any like thee
Like a prospector
After a treasure
Hopefully, Iโll dig on
Till the end of time
Iโll dig you
Like Iโll dig for gold.
ABOUT THE POEM
The poem is written by Adebayo Coker, a visual artist and poet. In 2003, the poem won the joint Hybrid Studios Valentine Competition in the UK.
The poem ‘I Dig’ must have been written with the intent to woo a lady or a poem to reassure someone about his love.
The word ‘dig’ is an African American slang, meaning to understand something or to like in a romantic sense. In standard English, to dig means to remove from the earth through the poking of the soil.
On first reading, the poem could go for an erotic poem, delving into the transcendental nature of love and sex, which is represented by the act of digging or poking, and this he compares to someone prospecting for some precious minerals from the earth.
This poem is representative of a search for true love, which is as pure as gold. This search takes the poet from one person to another until he comes across that person who is considered the ideal. This newfound individual, the poet continues to dig (love) and promises to dig till eternity.
The poem is a tercet, set in three verses of three lines each.
The poem opens with a search, comparable to that of a miner who never stops until he strikes the mineral.
