1777: Congress adopts the Stars and Stripes – During the American Revolution, the Continental Congress adopts a resolution stating that “the flag of the United States be thirteen alternate stripes red and white” and that “the Union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation.” The national flag, which became known as the “Stars and Stripes,” was based on the “Grand Union” flag, a banner carried by the Continental Army in 1776 that also consisted of 13 red and white stripes.

1919: Alcock and Brown take off for the first non-stop transatlantic flight
The British aviators began their journey in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and reached Galway in Ireland less than 16 hours later. One month earlier, Albert Cushing Read flew across the Atlantic, but his flight included a stop in the Azores Islands.
1982: Falklands War ends. After suffering through six weeks of military defeats against Britain’s armed forces, Argentina surrenders to Great Britain, ending the Falklands War.
1993: NEC publishes results from fifteen states on its billboard outside its headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria showing that M.K.O Abiola is leading in all regions of the country including his opponent Bashir Tofa’s home state, Kano.

1985: TWA Flight 847, a flight from Cairo to San Diego, was hijacked by terrorists, who killed one passenger and held others hostage until June 30th.

1994: South Africa’s President Nelson Mandela meets with the Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organisation Yasser Arafat, and they announce a Palestinian embassy will open in South Africa. Arafat’s advisor on African affairs, Salman al-Hirfi, will be the Palestinian ambassador.

2002: A large asteroid just misses the Earth. MN, a 73-meter lump, was three times closer to Earth than the Moon. It was first discovered three days after its closest approach.
2004: Vladimir Putin, the intelligence officer and politician who became president of Russia in 1999 upon the resignation of Boris Yeltsin, was overwhelmingly reelected to a second term as president this day in 2004.

1982 The Falklands War ends
After 74 days of fighting, British troops captured the capital, Stanley, prompting the Argentine forces to surrender and return the islands to British control.
1949: Albert II becomes the first monkey in space
The rhesus monkey was one of several animals used for testing purposes before sending humans into space. Albert II survived his ascent to 134 km (83 mi) altitude but died on his return to Earth due to a parachute failure.
1940: German troops occupy Paris. The fall of Paris marked the end of Germany’s attacks on the western front. In the Armistice of Compiègne, three-fifths of France was declared occupied.

Donald John Trump is an American politician, media personality, and businessman who served as the 45th president of the United States from 2017 to 2021. Trump received a Bachelor of Science in economics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968. His father named him president of his real estate business in 1971.

Boy George, 63 years
George Alan O’Dowd, known professionally as Boy George, is an English singer, songwriter, actor, DJ, and lead singer of the English pop band Culture Club. He began his solo career in 1987. Boy George grew up in Eltham and was part of the New Romantic movement which emerged in the late 1970s to early 1980s.

Steffi Graf, 54 years
Stefanie Maria Graf is a German former professional tennis player. She won 22 major singles titles, the second-most in women’s singles won since the start of the Open Era in 1968 and the third-most of all time.

Papa Wemba (14 June 1949 – 24 April 2016)
Jules Shungu Wembadio Kikumba also known as Papa Wemba, Congolese musician, in Lubefu, Belgian Congo. The “King of African Rhumba” transcended nationality, and became one of Africa’s most popular musicians who played Congolese rumba, soukous, and ndombolo. Dubbed the “King of Rumba Rock”. He died at the age of 66.
