1696: There were many attempts on the life of William III, King of England, who attracted opposition, in part, because he was a foreigner. On This Day, three would-be assassins, Rookwood, Lowick, and Cranbourne, were executed for an attempt that failed.
1945: A day before committing suicide, Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun marry. On the same day, U.S. troops liberated the Dachau concentration camp near Munich.
1968: The musical Hair goes to Broadway. As a portrait of the 1960s hippie counterculture and sexual revolution, it was highly controversial at the time. Some of the musical’s songs became anthems of the peace movement during the Vietnam War.
1972: Ntare V, age 24, the last King of Burundi, is assassinated at age 24. He only reigned for a few months in 1966 when a military coup dโรฉtat took over the government and forced him into exile. His return last month (March 1972) was seen as an attempt to re-establish the monarchy, coinciding with an uprising of the Hutus. He is shot dead. In the months ahead, up to 210,000 Hutus will die in the genocide carried out by government forces.

1975: ย Hubert van Es takes the famous picture of a helicopter airlift from a Saigon rooftop. The image shows South Vietnamese civilians employed by the U.S. trying to escape Saigon on the day before the city’s fall. It came to symbolize the American defeat in Vietnam.

1992: Riots erupt in Los Angeles after police officers are acquitted in Rodney King trial.ย In Los Angeles, California, four Los Angeles police officers who had been caught beating an unarmed African American motorist in an amateur video are acquitted of any wrongdoing in the arrest. Hours after the verdicts were announced, outrage and protest turned to violence as the LA riots began.

1997: The Chemical Weapons Convention becomes effective. The arms control treaty prohibits the production, storage, and use of chemical weapons. It has so far been ratified by some 190 countries.
2011: Britainโs Prince William weds Kate Middleton. On April 29, 2011, Great Britainโs Prince William marries his longtime girlfriend Catherine Elizabeth โKateโ Middleton at Westminster Abbey in London. Some 1,900 guests attended the ceremony, while another 1 million spectators lined the streets of London and an estimated 2 billion people around the world watched on television.
