Bolin in founding the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company in the US to make breakfast cereal for mental health patients, now the multinational food manufacturer Kellogg’s.
1945: Iwo Jima is invaded by U.S. Marines on this day. During the final phases of World War II, U.S. Marines invaded Iwo Jima to wrest control of the strategically important island from the Japanese, who put up fierce resistance in the ensuing battle.
1985: William J. Schroeder becomes the first recipient of an artificial heart to leave the hospital.
1989: Winnie Mandela’s (now Madikizela-Mandela) bodyguards, including Jerry Richardson and Jabu Sithole (coach of the Mandela United Football Club), were arrested at her home. They were arrested in connection with the death of Stompie Mokhetsi Seipei, after rumours in mid-February that the Mandela United Football Club had brought the 4 youths to Winnie’s home for interrogation. Jerry Richardson was later convicted of Stompie Seipei’s murder and sentenced to death.
2008: Ailing Fidel Castro steps down as Cuba’s president. Castro was 81 years old at the time and had been in power for 49 years. He was succeeded by his brother, Raul.
