On this day in 1606, British provocateur Guy Fawkesโone of the Gunpowder Plot conspirators, who sought to blow up Parliament and assassinate King James I for his repression of Roman Catholicsโwas executed in London.

1797 Franz Schubert
Franz Peter Schubert was an Austrian composer of the late Classical and early Romantic eras. Despite his short life, Schubert left behind a vast oeuvre, including more than 600 secular vocal works, seven complete symphonies, sacred music, operas, incidental music, and a large body of piano and chamber music. He died on 19 November 1828 at the age of 31.
