
1492: Martin Behaim presents the world’s first globe. The German geographer called his terrestrial globe Erdapfel or Earth Apple. It is kept in a darkened room at the Germanisches National Museum in Nuremberg, Germany.

1937: Duke of Windsor weds American socialite Wallis Simpson. In France, the Duke of Windsorโformerly King Edward VIII of Great Britain and Northern Irelandโmarries Wallis Warfield Simpson, a divorced American socialite for whom he abdicated the British throne in December 1936.

1943: A group of U.S. sailors marches through downtown Los Angeles, carrying clubs and other makeshift weapons and attacking anyone wearing a โzoot suitโโthe baggy wool pants, oversized coats, and porkpie hats favored by many young men of color at the time. Over the next week, the so-called Zoot Suit Riots spread throughout the city, including the largely Mexican-American neighborhood of East Los Angeles and the largely Black neighborhood of Watts.
1965: 120 miles above the Earth, Major Edward H. White II opens the hatch of the Gemini 4 and steps out of the capsule, becoming the first American astronaut to walk in space. Attached to the craft by a 25-foot tether and controlling his movements with a hand-held oxygen jet-propulsion gun, White remained outside the capsule for just over 20 minutes. As a spacewalker, White had been preceded by Soviet cosmonaut Aleksei A. Leonov, who on March 18, 1965, was the first man ever to walk in space.

1973: The world’s first supersonic airliner crashes. The Soviet Tupolev Tu-144 sometimes referred to as Concordski, disintegrated in mid-air during the 1973 Paris Air Show. 14 people died.
1982: The Israeli ambassador to the U.K. is shot. Shlomo Argov survived the assassination attempt by a Palestinian terrorist group, but he was permanently paralyzed. The event triggered the 1982 Lebanon War.

1989: Pro-democracy protest in Tiananmen Square crushed by Chinese military. On this day in 1989, the Chinese government called in the military to put down a pro-democracy demonstration carried out by more than 100,000 people in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, resulting in hundreds of deaths.

1995: At a meeting of the Democratic Alternative group, SSS agents arrest five of the group’s members, including its president, lawyer Alao Aka-Bashorun. Aka-Bashorun is a member of Abiola’s defence team.
1998: Constitutional Lawyer, Dr. Chimezie Ikeazor (SAN) files a suit at the Court of Appeal, Abuja seeking to invoke legal power to protect Abacha as the sole Presidential candidate against any opposition.

1998: 101 people die in the Eschede train disaster. Traveling at 200 km/h (120 mph), a high-speed ICE train derailed and crashed into a bridge. The accident was caused by a fatigue crack in one of the train’s wheels. It was the deadliest high-speed train disaster in history.

2013: The trial against whistleblower Bradley Manning begins
The American soldier, a trans woman now called Chelsea Manning, was responsible for leaking classified videos documenting U.S. war atrocities during the Iraq War. She was sentenced to 35 years confinement.

2016: American boxer and social activist Muhammad Aliโwho justified his self-proclaimed nickname โthe Greatestโ by becoming arguably the most admired and dominant heavyweight boxer in the history of the sportโdied at age 74.

2017: Terrorists attack London Bridge
During one horrific 8-minute period on June 3, 2017, eight people were killed as a band of terrorists drove a van through a pedestrian walkway on the London Bridge. The men then exited, armed with pink steak knives, and proceeded to slash and stab people in a nearby market. The attack was the third to take place in London in 2017.
