1484: William Caxton printed his translation of Aesop’s Fables. As far as is known, Caxton was the first English person to work as a printer and the first to introduce a printing press into England. He was also the first English retailer of printed books.
1827: German composer Ludwig van Beethoven died of cirrhosis of the liver at age 56.
1917: The first of three battles fought in the Allied attempt to defeat Turkish forces in and around the Palestinian city of Gaza takes place on this day in 1917.
1927: South Africa’s Immorality Act, becomes law, prohibiting extramarital sex between a white and a black person. In 1950, the act was amended to prohibit whites from having sex with any person of a non-white race.

1975: The Biological Weapons Convention comes into effect
The treaty bans the development, production, and stockpiling of biological and toxin weapons. It has now been ratified by most countries worldwide.
1979: The Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty is signed
Egypt’s President Anwar al-Sadat and Israel’s Prime Minister Menachem Begin signed the treaty, which ended 30 years of war between the 2 countries. Egypt was consequently suspended from Arab League membership.
1991: Four (4) South American countries establish Mercosur
Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay were the founding members of the Southern Common Market.
1992: Heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson was sentenced to six years in prison following a rape conviction in Indianapolis, Indiana.
1995: The Schengen Agreement enters into force
Within the Schengen Area, which encompasses most of Europe, regular border checks have been abolished.
1997: The bodies of 39 members of the Heaven’s Gate techno-religious cult who committed suicide were found inside a rented mansion in Rancho Santa Fe, California.
1999: Ex-miners suffering from lung diseases won a compensation deal worth £2 billion. It was the biggest industrial injuries case in British legal history.
2000: Vladimir Putin is elected President of Russia

2005: Frederick Rotimi Alade Williams, lawyer and politician, died. He was the first Nigerian to become a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
2006: From 6 a.m. the prohibition of smoking in all substantially enclosed public places came into force in Scotland.

Taribo West, 50 years
Taribo West is a Nigerian pastor and former professional footballer who played as a defender. He is best remembered for his various unusual and colourful hairstyles. He was born in 1974 in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. After winning several major trophies with Auxerre in French football, West went on to play for both Milanese clubs, Inter Milan and AC Milan.
Sandra Day O’Connor (26 March 1930- 1 December 2023)
Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman to become a U.S. Supreme Court justice, was born in El Paso, Texas. She was a politician and a moderate conservative.
