The University of Lagos was founded in 1962. It is one the best universities in Nigeria. The students of the university refer to it as “the University of first choice and nation’s pride”. The university has three campuses. Two of its campuses are located at Yaba where the main campus is located in Akoka and the other campus at the former School of Radiography. The third campus which is the College of Medicine is located in Idi-Araba, Surulere. This article is basically on the main campus. The campus environment is made up of different buildings, including faculties, departments, halls, library, canteens and many more. There are also relaxation centres for hanging out.
One of the factors that add to the prestige of the University of Lagos is its Senate Building. The building is a thirteen-storey high rise structure that towers above other buildings in Unilag. The building also houses the Unilag Radio Station. It is regarded as one the most beautiful senate buildings in Nigeria. The J.F Ade Ajayi Hall formerly known as Main Auditorium is located near the Senate Building. The hall is a prestigious building in the university environment. The breathtaking structures in the university have made the institution to be one of the most sought- after universities in Nigeria.
There are eight faculties on the main campus which include Education, Environmental Sciences, Social Sciences, Art, Law, Business Administration, Engineering and Science. The faculty of education is located near the main gate. It is regarded as the “mother of all faculties”. The faculty of Environmental Sciences is located near the main gate. It is located beside the “UBA Green Park”. The faculty of Social Sciences is close to “New hall”. It is along the road that leads to DLI. The faculty of Arts boasts of owning one of the best buildings on the campus environment. It is located near the Senate building. The faculty of Law is beside the Senate building. The faculty of Business Administration is located behind the Faculty of Law. The Faculty of Engineering is located opposite the Senate Building. The faculty of Science is located near King Jaja Hall.

The campus environment is very conducive for learning. There are lecture halls in each faculty. There are also big lecture halls on campus which can accommodate many students at a time and they include Julius Berger at Engineering, Arts Theatre, Staff school hall, DLI hall, Law annex, Glasshouse, etc. Furthermore, there are many libraries on campus. The University Main Library is located close to the Senate building. The building of the main library is very attractive and beautiful.
The Main Library comprises the Gandhi Library, Law Library, Medical Library and Boulos Engineering Library. There are also other prominent faculty libraries which include the Education Library and Teslim Olawale Elias Library and so on. There is a bookshop on campus, the Unilag bookshop is located close to the faculty of Arts.
Again, the campus boasts a medical centre which is well equipped. Qualified medical professionals are also on ground to attend to health challenges of students. The Unilag Medical Centre is located close to Unilag Staff School. Also, ambulances are available for rapid responses for emergency purposes. The University also has a security post which is known as “Alpha Base”. It is located near the school main gate around the faculty of Education. Here, students or non-students who have violated the institution rules will be brought here. There is also a sports center on campus. All sorts of sporting activities take place here. Students and lecturers make use of the sports centre. It is located near the Jelili Adebisi Omotola Hall formerly known as the multipurpose hall.
Furthermore, the university has thirteen halls of residence for undergraduate students and two halls of residence for postgraduate. Six out of the thirteen halls are for the male undergraduate students, they include King Jaja hall, Mariere hall, Biobaku hall, El Kanemi, Sodeinde hall, Eni-Njoku hall. The other seven belongs to the female, they include Moremi hall, Honours hall, Kofo hall, Amina hall, Makama hall, Fagunwa hall, Madam Tinubu hall. The two postgraduate halls are mixed and they include Erastus Akingbola hall and Henry Carr hall.
The campus environment is very welcoming and it has many relaxation centres for hanging out. The Senate Love Garden is one the most popular place on campus. The Love Garden is an interesting place for lovers to hang out. It is near the senate building. Also, the UBA Park is a good place to relax on campus. It is located near the main gate. The Adetokunbo Sofuluwe Park is also another place for relaxation on campus. It is very attractive especially at night. It is situated near the senate building.
The Lagoon Front is another popular spot on campus. It faces the third mainland bridge. It is a conducive place to relax and hang out. People also come for photo-shoot and also record music videos here. The coffee shop is an attractive spot on campus. It is a place to relax with cup of coffee and snacks. The Unilag Botanical Garden and Zoo is a unique place to hangout because of the cheap and affordable internet supply. Jeka Play is another interesting spot to hang out, it is located at new hall. Games are available and foods are sold at Jeka Play.
On Campus, there are many popular eateries and canteens where students go. Some of the popular ones include Salado, Mavise, Iya-Moria, Quintec, Red bricks, 2001 and many more. There are also places to shop on campus which include YemYem and PMG which are located at new hall. There is also Best Choice which is at the Faculty of Social Science.The school also has a bakery beside new hall that sells Unilag bread
There are five banks on campus, they are Wema bank, Access Bank, First bank, GT bank and UBA bank. Wema bank is located in front of the faculty of Environmental Science. Access bank is located at New Hall. First bank is located at the university second gate. GTbank is located near King Jaja hall. Finally, UBA bank is located at the Main Library.
