The British Government has announced a plan of action to address the rise in legal migration, which will have a tangible impact on net migration into the UK and curb abuse of the immigration system.
Key measures that the Government is taking to cut net migration are:
- Stopping overseas care workers from bringing family dependants.
- The government also said it would scrap a rule that lets employers in sectors on a “shortage occupation list” pay immigrant workers 20% less than U.K. citizens. Increasing the earning threshold for overseas workers by nearly 50% from its current position of £26,200 to £38,700, encouraging businesses to look to British talent first and invest in their workforce. Under the new rules, immigrants will have to earn more to get a work visa and will find it harder to bring family members to the U.K.
- British citizens who want to bring their foreign spouse to Britain will have to earn the same amount – almost double the current threshold of £18,600
- Starting in January 2024, most foreign graduate students will no longer be able to bring family members to the U.K. except, if their institution has confirmed that their course is a PhD, other doctoral qualification, or a research-based higher degree, in addition to other criteria.
- There will be a raise in the minimum income for family visas to £38,700 in line with the minimum salary threshold for the Skilled Worker route.
- Birth in the UK does not automatically make a baby a British citizen. The baby needs to have a parent with British citizenship or settled status in the UK to be born British.
- The new measures would reduce by 300,000 the number of people eligible to move to Britain in future years.
- This package will end the exploitation and abuse identified by the Migration Advisory Committee and National Care Association and ensure that those who come to the UK on this route genuinely provide care for those who need it. and to prevent abuse.
- The reforms will ensure that providers in England will only be able to sponsor migrant workers if they are undertaking activities regulated by the Care Quality Commission.
- The changes in the rule will not affect doctors or nurses. The NHS will continue to have the access it currently enjoys.
