Data from the Federal Ministry of Education, (FMOE) has revealed that 23,732 students were admitted into public and private universities during the 2022/2023 academic session.
The top three states with the highest number of students admitted were Imo, Delta, and Anambra.
The data revealed that Computer Science was the most sought-after course, followed by Microbiology, Accountancy, and Mass Communication.
Other popular courses included Biochemistry, Political Science, Business Administration, Economics, Sociology, and Medical Laboratory Science.
Microbiology had 16,440 students admitted, with Benue, Imo, and Ondo leading, as Accountancy/Accounting had 14,303 students admitted, with Oyo, Ogun, and Imo states having the highest number.
Mass Communication had 14,009 students admitted, with Imo, Delta, and Ogun states recording the highest number.
Biochemistry and Political Science had 13,662 and 11,482 students admitted, respectively.
Business Administration and Economics had 10,043 and 8,925 students admitted, respectively, with Anambra and Oyo states having the highest number of students.
Sociology and Medical Laboratory Science had 7,774 and 7,484 students admitted respectively, with Kogi and Imo states having the highest number of students.
However, the surge in admissions for Computer Science has been attributed to the growing importance of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the employment market.
