The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is deeply saddened by the recent passing of former Super Falcons’ and U17 Boys’ National Team Coach, Godwin Izilein, and renowned football journalist, diarist, and analyst, Kayode Tijani.
Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, the General Secretary of the NFF, expressed shock and sorrow at the deaths of these two respected figures in Nigerian football, both of whom were also highly regarded internationally for their contributions to the sport.
“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of Coach Izilein and Mr. Kayode Tijani,” said Dr. Sanusi. “Their legacies will forever be remembered in the Nigerian football community and beyond. Coach Izilein’s achievements, including leading the Super Falcons to victory in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in 2004, are a testament to his dedication and talent.
Meanwhile, Kayode Tijani’s meticulous work as a journalist and his commitment to recording the history of the sport has left an indelible mark.”
Coach Izilein passed away at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, while Tijani breathed his last at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital. Tijani was laid to rest in Lagos in line with Muslim rites.
Tijani, known for his vibrant personality and dedication to his craft, had a distinguished career in football journalism, contributing to various local and international publications such as FAME magazine, Complete Football magazine, and African Soccer. He was also a co-founder of Nigeria’s first-ever all-sport daily publication, Sportlight, and actively participated in football punditry on radio and television stations in Nigeria and abroad.
The NFF extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of Coach Izilein and Kayode Tijani. May their souls rest in peace.
