Abia Warriors and El-Kanemi Warriors are set to make history by becoming the first two teams to compete in the final of Nigeria’s oldest club competition in Abuja next Saturday. Both teams emerged victorious in their intense semi-final matches on Thursday.
The Abia State giants secured their spot in the final after defeating Kano Pillars in a 4-3 penalty shootout at the Lafia City Stadium, following a goalless draw in regular time.
Similarly, former champions El-Kanemi Warriors triumphed over surprise semi-finalists Kebbi United with a 5-4 penalty shootout win at the NFF/FIFA Goal Project in Abuja, after their match also ended scoreless in regulation time.
During the shootouts, Kano Pillars’ forward Ibrahim Mustapha missed his team’s final kick, negating the need for Abia Warriors to take their last kick. Kano Pillars missed two of their five attempts, while Abia Warriors successfully converted all four of their shots.
In Abuja, Kebbi United missed their second kick in the shootout, while El-Kanemi Warriors converted all five of their attempts to advance to the grand finale at the nearby MKO Abiola National Stadium on June 29th.
