Nigeria’s U17 football team, the Golden Eaglets, is gearing up to defend their title at the upcoming WAFU B U17 Championship in Accra, Ghana. The championship is set to kick off on Wednesday, 15th May, with Nigeria arriving in Accra on Saturday ahead of their opening match.
Led by coach Manu Garba, who previously guided the team to victory in the 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup, the Eaglets are eager to reclaim their regional crown after their previous triumph in Kumasi two years ago. Despite a disappointing performance at the Africa U17 Cup of Nations, which rendered them ineligible for the subsequent World Cup, Garba is back at the helm and determined to steer the team to success again.
In Group B of the tournament, Nigeria will face tough competition from Burkina Faso, Niger Republic, and Togo, with the primary objective being qualification for the Africa U17 Cup of Nations next year. The Eaglets’ campaign kicks off against Burkina Faso at the University Stadium on Thursday, 16th May, followed by matches against Niger Republic on Sunday, 19th May, and Togo on Wednesday, 22nd May.
The team is focused on not only retaining the regional title but also on further development in preparation for future competitions, including a potential sixth-world title. Matches against Niger Republic and Togo will also be held at the University Stadium and the Accra Sports Stadium, respectively.
