Nigeria and Ghana, two powerhouses in global youth football, are set to clash on Tuesday for the bronze medal at the ongoing WAFU B U17 Championship in Accra, Ghana.
While both nations were expected to compete for the championship, they were defeated in the semi-finals. Nigeria’s Eaglets fell to Cote d’Ivoire’s Baby Elephants, while Ghana’s Black Starlets were beaten by Burkina Faso’s Baby Etalons.
With uncertainty still lingering over the number of teams that will qualify for the 2025 Africa U17 Cup of Nations from WAFU B, Nigeria Football Federation’s General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, has urged the Eaglets to approach the third-place playoff as if it were the final.
“We are still awaiting clarity on the number of teams that will qualify for the U17 AFCON from this tournament. Some people have said only three teams; some said four teams. It is therefore important that our boys go out there and play their hearts out to finish in third place,” said Sanusi.
Kickoff for the third-place match is scheduled for 3 pm Ghana time (4 pm Nigeria time) at the University of Accra Stadium, preceding the final between Burkina Faso and Cote d’Ivoire, which begins at 6 pm Ghana time (7 pm Nigeria time).
