Travelling nowadays has become a very unbearable task for people, especially we students.
It was towards Christmas time when we were supposed to go home for our break that transport fare more than doubled.
The day before travelling our parents sent us transport fare, and on getting to the POS attendant we were told that the commission had increased to #100 per a thousand i.e. for #10000 we would have to pay #1000 as commission.
As a result of this, we had to go about looking for a cheaper price. Unfaillingly we got the money at the rate of #50 per a thousand.
The following day we got to the park around 4:00 am, meeting so many travellers who were waiting for the bus. There was no bus available inside the park to pick us up, but outside the few buses that were there added to the fare, like Ibadan from Oye-Ekiti, which was #7500 and became #10000.
Despite the increment, some students boarded the bus so they could get home that day. Then those of us who didn’t have so much with us had to wait in the park to board the bus at the normal price.
As time went on, buses started arriving but before they could enter, students started rushing them, entering through the boot, the window and the main door. As far as they were seated they didn’t care. Some even got rolled on the floor, while others got injured due to the rush.
This continued till evening. We that didn’t have the strength to struggle had to wait till after 3 pm. One of the men that were there later came to us and told us that a bus was going to be available to take us home. When the bus came, we took off after 4 pm and got to Lagos around 10:30 pm.
The journey was smooth though our parents were scared, calling every second while we were sleeping during the ride.
The school had organised two free buses but they were not enough for everyone but at least it took a few people home.
The scarcity of cash and high transport fares was a lot of trouble for us this Christmas holiday.
