Staff of the Federal University of Technology Akure, FUTA Women Forum female football team displayed their proficiency and tactical skills when they pipped their male counterpart scoring two (2) unreplied goals in a novelty match to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the FUTA women on Wednesday, 1st November, 2023.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji took the first kick at about 1:35 pm to start the match. While the male team was still trying to settle down on the pitch, Coach Favour Shittu scored the first goal for the FUTA female team through a penalty kick 10 minutes into the first half of the game. What would have given the male team their first goal in the match was prevented by a display of outstanding goalkeeping by the FUTA female goalkeeper, Mrs Tola Orogun.
Just as the second half started the female team scored the second goal through the President of the women’s forum, Dr Catherine Ikumapayi.
Despite the effort of the male team to score goals, none came till the final whistle was blown by the referee at about 2:03 pm.
Addressing the teams and staff, the Vice Chancellor, a sports enthusiast with an interest in badminton, said the novelty match has achieved its objective. According to her, the purpose of the novelty match was to unwind, display talents and skills, and unite the staff. She said”, We should purposely do things that will converge us, (staff, students, and other stakeholders), that’s the nature we want to spread within the FUTA environment”.
