A lion at the Zoological Garden of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, has attacked one Mr Olabode Olawuyi, throwing the entire University community into mourning.
This was disclosed by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju.
According to him, Olawuyi, a Veterinary Technologist, who has been taking care of the Zoological Garden for over ten years was pounced upon by the nine-year-old male lion when he, on the afternoon of Monday February 19, 2024, was feeding the beast.

It was however too late for other members who tried all their efforts to rescue Olawuyi from the jaws of the hungry lion who had caused a great deal of damage while attacking the victim.
Meanwhile, the sad news prompted the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Bamire, to halt the meeting being held by the management of the institution, visiting the scene of the incident to assess the situation.
All medical efforts to save Olawuyi as confirmed by the Acting Director of the University Health and Medical Centre, Dr Tirimisiyu Olatunji, proved futile as the injuries he sustained during the attack were so severe that he died.
However, the Vice Chancellor has called for a detailed investigation into the incident, and the University authority, as well, has sent a delegation to the bereaved to commiserate with them.
