The Super Eagles of Nigeria faced a significant setback in their 2026 World Cup qualification campaign, losing 2-1 to Benin Republic. This defeat puts Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the next football tournament at risk.
On Monday, Benin Republic achieved a historic victory over the Super Eagles, marking their first win against Nigeria. This result leaves Nigeria’s World Cup qualification hopes hanging by a thread.
With only three points from four qualification games, Nigeria is now in danger of missing the next World Cup. The Super Eagles needed a win after their recent draw against South Africa, but their efforts fell short.
The match began positively for Nigeria, with Raphael Onyedika of Club Brugge scoring the opening goal in the 25th minute. However, Benin Republic, led by former Nigerian coach Gernot Rohr, equalized in the 37th minute through Jodei Dossou, capitalizing on a defensive error by Nigeria.
Just before halftime, Benin’s Steve Mounie added to Nigeria’s woes with a second goal. Despite making several changes in the second half in a bid to find an equalizer, the Super Eagles were unable to break through Benin’s solid defense.
As a result of Monday’s game, Nigeria now sits fifth in Group C for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
