The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy has awarded the 2023 research grant of the Nigeria Artificial Intelligence Research Scheme (NAIRS) to two teams of researchers from Kwara State University, Malete, Ilorin.
Under the utility category, KWASU’s Director of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Systems, Dr Abdulwaheed Musa’s proposal entitled, AI System for Assessing the Vulnerability and Providing Adaptability Solutions to Communities Facing Climate Change, was awarded.
For the Agricultural category, Dr Ronke Seyi Babatunde’s team of researchers emerged victorious with its proposal entitled AI Powered Integrated Crop Management in Nigeria to Address Farmers’ Challenges and Increase Productivity.
According to the letter of provisional offer from NAIRS, the initiatives push the boundaries of AI and contribute to the socio-economic development of Nigeria, laying the groundwork for a tech-forward and resilient future.
It emphasised that the synergy of Nigerian researchers, start-ups, and technology companies alongside collaborative efforts with foreign researchers, reflects a holistic approach to technology innovation.
In the letter, the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, disclosed that there were 45 winning proposals selected by independent reviewers out of over two thousand applications received.
The research grant is to support researchers and start-ups to accelerate their research development efforts in AI.
