The Education Sub-Committee of the Senators’ Wives Association of Nigeria (SEWAN) has taken a commendable step towards enhancing educational opportunities for indigent female students at the University of Abuja.
The committee recently awarded scholarships to 18 deserving students, providing vital financial support until their graduation.
The formal announcement of the scholarships was made by Mrs. Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, the wife of the Senate President. Mrs. Akpabio’s representative, Hajia Laila Barau Jibrin, the wife of the Deputy Senate President, officiated the ceremony.
Mrs. Jibrin emphasized that the scholarships would cover the entire tuition fees of the recipients, offering substantial financial relief to facilitate their academic pursuits.
To further ease the financial burden associated with pursuing higher education, each student will also receive an annual stipend of N150,000.
This additional support aims to enable the beneficiaries to focus on their studies without undue financial stress.
SEWAN, in a thoughtful gesture, presented a laptop to each of the 18 students, acknowledging the crucial role of technology in modern education.
The initiative seeks to empower the recipients with the necessary tools to excel academically and stay connected in an increasingly digitalized world.
Professor Janet Plang, the Chairperson of the sub-committee responsible for this initiative, expressed SEWAN’s unwavering commitment to bridging gender gaps and fostering the improvement of girl-child education across Nigeria.
Professor Plang highlighted the pivotal role such initiatives play in creating a conducive environment for the holistic development of female students.
The Senators’ Wives Association of Nigeria continues to demonstrate its dedication to philanthropy and social development. This scholarship program represents a noteworthy stride towards a more inclusive and equitable educational landscape.
The association’s commitment aligns with broader efforts to create a society that values and supports the educational empowerment of all its members.
