Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has defended the club’s owners, FSG, regarding their approach to transfer spending. While acknowledging fans’ frustrations during his nine-year tenure, Klopp emphasized his belief that the owners have done their best.
“I understand that people say, ‘they didn’t back him enough,’ but I’ve never seen it that way,” Klopp explained. “I don’t know if they could have done more, but I don’t think so. We had these discussions internally and never in public. I didn’t want to create the impression that we were not united. Any disagreements we had were kept private, and publicly, we presented a unified front. That’s how we operate.”
Klopp likened the situation to a personal anecdote: “If my son asked me for 50 euros and I only had 25 to give, what can I do? I just give him the 25. For us, it’s about doing things the Liverpool way—properly and responsibly. We don’t overspend; we spend what we earn on the team, the stadium, and the club’s infrastructure. This approach keeps the club healthy.”
He contrasted Liverpool’s method with that of other clubs, noting, “You could argue that clubs like Barcelona aren’t financially healthy but remain at the top. That’s not the Liverpool way. Historically, our club has been built on certain principles, influenced by figures like Bill Shankly. While younger fans might have a different perspective, those over 30 understand and appreciate our traditional approach.”
Klopp concluded by reflecting on the club’s achievements and near-misses: “We have been unlucky at times and maybe not good enough in moments to win three Premier Leagues and three Champions Leagues, but we always strive to do things the right way.”
