New Era Girls Senior Secondary School secured a historic victory in the inaugural Monday Gift Girls Cup (MGGC) 2023, showcasing a blend of skill and commitment.
The competition, hosted at the Obele Community High School Ground in Surulere, Lagos, underscored the harmonious connection between sports and education.
The tournament, backed by the dynamic Gift Monday and efficiently overseen by Dr. Gbeleyi Olasunkanmi, aimed to involve girls aged 8 to 16 in grassroots football while instilling vital life skills. Participating schools, including New Era Girls, Obele Community, Araromi, and Coker Secondary Schools, demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship and talent.
Mr. Adebanji Atewogboye SKIBANJ, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Grassroots Sports Development, graced the occasion, encouraging young athletes to dedicate themselves to both academics and sports. SKIBANJ highlighted the holistic advantages of sports, emphasizing its role in promoting individual health beyond being a lucrative profession.
The pinnacle of the competition saw Edet Precious of Obele Community Senior Secondary School earning the prestigious title of Best Player, while Taiwo Ayomide of New Era Girls Senior Secondary School claimed the Highest Goal Scorer accolade. Cash prizes totalling ₦150,000.00 were awarded to the champion, runner-up, and third-place winner.
Mr Segun Osinaike, the Tutor General/Permanent Secretary of Education District IV, and other dignitaries enhanced the event’s grandeur with their presence at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.
New Era Girls Senior Secondary School, Gift Monday’s alma mater, emerged as deserving champions, with Community Senior Secondary School, Obele securing the second position and Araromi Senior Secondary School, Orile claiming the third spot.
